This is because, the people believed that, Stephen Douglas and John Bell were more favourable disposed to maintain the status quo regarding to the policy of the majority of the US States when compared to J. Breckinridge and Abraham Lincoln who wished to change the policy favorable to the people.

A typical example is between Stephen Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. While Douglas wanted the States to determine if to stop slave trade by popular opinion of the people living in such states, Abraham Lincoln wanted slavery to be stopped entirely in the country due to his believe that it is a national embarassment (and not minding whether they whole states in the country want it or not).

Majority of the slave tolerant states saw Abraham Lincoln as an extremist who wanted to disrupt the status quo regarding to slave ownership and trading hence the reason the went to war inorder to maintain that policy of slave ownership.
