Chinampas, also known as "floating gardens", allowed the Aztecs to utilize the swampy lands around the lakes for agriculture, greatly expanding productivity. To create chinampas, Aztecs dug canals and piled the excess mud onto large woven reed mats. Then, they would drive posts into the ground and tie the mats into place. The permanently seal the position of the maps, trees were planted in the corners of the mats; the trees also helped prevent soil erosion.
