The Church had the most influence on people in Europe.

After Christianity was made the official religion of the Roman Empire, it became the most dominant religion in Europe till this day.

From the Middle Ages to the Enlightenment, the Church was so powerful that:

  • it had direct influence over monarchies in Europe
  • had to assent to laws of many states before those laws could be followed
  • could decide what activities people could and could not do
  • could start wars and end them by mediation as well

The Church was so powerful that it hindered scientific progress and led to the Age of Enlightenment where it lost a lot of its power and steadily declined to what it is now.

In conclusion, the Church was very influential in Europe and had a direct say in how the people of Europe lived and their mindset as well.
