Ionic bonds are strong electrostatic forces of attraction formed between oppositely charged ions (between metal and non-metals)
Explanation:
An ionic bond is defined as the bond that occurs due to transfer of one or more electrons from one atom to another.
So, atoms that have greater difference in electronegativity tend to form ionic bond because more electronegative atom attracts the valenec electrons of less electronegative atom. As a result, partial opposite charges arises on the combining atoms.
For example, sodium is a metal and chlorine is a non-metal. So, when both of then chemically combine together then they tend to form ionic bond.
Thus, we can conclude that an ionic bond can be formed between oppositely charged atoms or between a metal and non-metal.
