When consumed foods are not properly digested the required energy molecules from the food will not be fully absorbed into the body system which leads to insufficient food molecules in the body.

Therefore during exercise the body will rely more on the molecules from air which will make the exercise routine more difficult because the calories are burnt out more easily without replacement from the food molecules complimenting the air molecules.
