There are more collisions per second and the collisions have greater energy

How temperature affects a reaction?

  1. Increasing the temperature increases the average speed of the reactant molecules. As more molecules move faster, the number of molecules moving fast enough to react increases, which results in faster formation of products.
  2. Similarly, the rate of reaction will decrease with a decrease in temperature.
  3. Increasing the temperature increases reaction rates because of the disproportionately large increase in the number of high energy collisions. It is only these collisions (possessing at least the activation energy for the reaction) which result in a reaction.
