Answer:
1974
Explanation:
In 1972, Richard Nixon ran for reelection and he and his advisers thought they needed a strong campaign thus burglars were sent to break into the Democratic National Committee’s Watergate headquarters to steal copies of documents and wire the office phones. In the beginning, it was not evident that the burglars were connected to the president, but copies of the reelection committee’s White House were found in the burglars’ belongings spurring what was called the Watergate scandal. Nixon gave a speech swearing that his White House officials had nothing to do with the break-in and in November 1972 the president was reelected. However, Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein began to suspect that there was something else. In 1974, the House of Representatives voted to impeach Nixon for obstruction of justice, abuse of power, criminal cover-up and several violations of the Constitution. Finally, in August 1974, after his role in the conspiracy was revealed, he was forced to resign. and Gerald Ford was sworn in as president.
