Main character is Arnold Spirit Jr, he leaves the Indian reservation to go to a white people high school. There he faces some racism and the tribe back at the reservation call him a white lover for abandoning his own people.
His friend Rowdy, who he is very close to, is very mad at him for this too.
Arnold reacts to all his misery with humor; he draws silly cartoons portraying his emotions.
The characters actions and approaches are different. Rowdy is very aggressive because he grew up with and abusive alcoholic father.
Arnold is more of a pacifist but is used to fighting on the reservation (and losing) because it's normal there.
Arnold experiences many deaths of close family in a short amount of time. His grandmother, sister, and family friend all day in a few months.
He grieves them and finds all their deaths were caused by alcohol... his grandmother died by a drink driver crash, Eugene(the family friend, he's like an uncle to him) died from being shot by a drunk, Sister died in her trailer from a fire started by a drunk at her party.
The deaths are climax. Falling Action includes everyone (tribe and the highschoolers) apologizing for being very harsh on him.
