The first ten, called Bill of Rights, were approved just four years later. They established, for example, the freedoms of expression and religiosity.
The American document dates back to the 1776 revolution, when the 13 British colonies on the Atlantic coast became independent from England. The officialization of the sovereignty of each colony took place with the writing of the Articles of Confederation, in 1781. This, however, did not prevent a succession of crises, such as the internal dispute of the inhabitants for lands of the west. The case led to the formation of a democratic convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There the Constitution was drafted, from May to September 1787.
