Some 4.2 million years ago, it was discovered through archaeological findings that Australopithecus existed in the Eastern part of Africa and they spread through the continent before they became extinct 1.9 million years ago.

A specimen of genus Australopithecus was found in 1924 in South Africa at a Lime quarry by workers, also in 1959 the first Australopithecus was found in the Eastern part of Africa in Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania by Leakey.
