The Enlightenment changed the political views at the time, by challenging the ideas proposed by the church- to a more "rational" viewpoint, that allowed for more inclusion of the average citizen in za church affairs and the Holy Bible- rather then the previous idea that only clergy men could read an interpret the Bible.  This  set the path for modern separation between church and state.
