The concept of the phi phenomenon is credited to Max Wertheimer, a German psychologist and the phenomenon refers to the visual illusion of the impression of continuous motion between different objects seen in a fast sequence. A famous example of this is when you go to a movie theater, you see a fast succession of still frames that make up the whole movie. Yet it doesn't feel like the video reel is running through a bunch of frames between your head. It looks like a total picture.
