Type of cement:

a) Type II or Type IV cement can be used in the construction of heavy pier.  The Type II is moderate sulphate resistant cement. Therefore, they can be used in  water and soil containing moderate amount of sulphate contamination.  They also have a moderate heat of hydration making it more suitable for the construction of large structures. While constructing heavy structures there will be a large amount of heat being radiated due to the exothermic hydration process. This can be avoided by using this type of cement.  The Type IV cement can also be used as they have a very low heat of hydration. This is most important when constructing large pier.

b) Type III cement is best suited for construction in cold weathers.  The water easily crystallizes and form ice within the pores in cold climate.  Therefore, in cold weathers it is difficult to control the curing. In Type III cement  they form a high early strength. The workability is high and they are faster in  construction. The controlled curing time is comparatively less in this type of cement.  These features make it best suited for cold weathers.

c) Type II cement is suitable for warm weather conditions.  They have a low heat of hydration. This type of cement can also resist a moderate amount of sulphate attack. All these conditions make it suitable for warm weather.

d) Normal cement is used where no specific exposure condition is specified. This is suitable for most constructions.  They are used in general construction work like floors, reinforced cement  concrete, etc.

e) Type V cements is used in soil which is severely exposed to sulphate. This type of  cement can resist high amount of sulphate attack. This type of cement can resist  up to to 2.0 % of sulphate attack in soil.
