• Write a complete paragraph of at least five original sentences that explains how the fable and your story reveal the same theme.
• Use specific details from each story in your paragraph. Explain how your story choice makes the theme in the fable more modern or new.
The Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing
A Wolf found great difficulty in getting at the sheep, given the watchfulness of the shepherd and his dogs. But one day, it found the skin of a sheep that had been flayed and thrown aside. He put it on over his own fur (so he looked just like a sheep) and strolled down among the sheep. The Lamb that belonged to the Sheep, whose skin the Wolf was wearing, began to follow the Wolf in the Sheep's clothing; so, leading the Lamb a little apart, he soon made a meal off her, and for some time he succeeded in deceiving the sheep, and enjoying hearty meals.
Theme: Appearances can be deceiving.
A story that has a similar theme as The Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing would be The Tortoise and the Hare. The Tortoise and the Hare is a story about a slow tortoise and a fast hare, the theme was created when the tortoise asked the hare to race, the hare agreed. When the race had started the tortoise was inching down the path as the hare sped through, the hare knew he’d win so he sat down near a tree and napped, eventually the tortoise had passed the hare. When the hare woke up he ran towards the finish line they were both neck and neck however the tortoise had beaten him, the hare was in shock that he had lost to a slow tortoise. The lesson in this story was “Slow and steady win the race”. As we see the hare had the idea of winning because the tortoise was slow, this backs up the theme “Appearances can be deceiving”. This makes the fable come out new because both stories have a similar theme but a different outcome.
