I think the story would have been quite different if the author chose to write it in a different point of view, other than Emily's mother. For example, if the story was written from Emily's point of view, the story would've changed juristically due to the fact that we would have a better understanding of what was going on in the main character's head. We would've had a greater understanding of how Emily changed through the years she spent at a convalescent home, we would've seen her perspective of her childhood, and we would have a better understanding in general of Emily's mental health. This would have changed the story in the way we could see a different side of the entire story and get a fuller story in general.
