Why are coins one of the most important sources of historical information for archeologists? (site 1)

Respuesta :

Coins are one of the most important data sources for archaeologists and historians trying to understand the past.

Coins are the earliest form of evidence of human economic activity. When early men began to have surplus produce, the need for exchange arose. Barter – commodity for commodity or commodity for service – was used in primitive society to accomplish this.

However, as society became more complex and people's needs grew, a universally accepted metallic medium was developed. Different societies used different metallic media: in India, it was a Nishka – an ornament; in China, it was an iron knife.

India later adopted the use of definite-weight, high-purity metallic coins. Symbols were most likely stamped on these pieces to certify their weight and fineness.

This is partly due to the fact that they are frequently imprinted with words and images, unlike most other ancient artifacts. Their tenacity and proclivity for large-scale reproduction are also factors.
