I will describe most of the matter in my current environment (around me) as being solid because they all have a definite shape and a fixed volume.
In Chemistry, matter can be defined as anything that has mass and occupies space. Thus, any physical object or substance that is found on earth is typically composed of matter.
Basically, matter are known to be made up of atoms and as a result of this fact, has the property of existing in three (3) distinct states;
- Solid: it is a distinct state of matter in which the physical substance has a definite shape and fixed volume but not compressible. Some examples of solid are cars, pencils, screwdrivers, televisions, buildings, trees, computers, satellite dish, etc.
- Liquid: it is a distinct state of matter in which the physical substance can be poured and takes the shape of its container. Also, liquids generally have a definite volume. Some examples of liquid are urine, beer, water, wine, milk, blood, ink, etc.
- Gas: it is a distinct state of matter in which the physical substance has no definite shape or volume and as a result fills all available space. Also, gases are easily compressible and can flow. Some examples of gases are hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, argon, methane, etc.
