Answer: use this formula: N(N-1)/2, n=# of people shaking hands, and since your not shaking your own hand, this is where n-1 comes in (total number of people is 4 so everyone shakes hands with three people). So now you have n(n-1), this is the number of people times the number of people shaking hands...this is where dividing by two comes in so we don't count every handshake twice (that's why we're using division).
n(n-1)/2
4(4-1)/2
4(3)/2=12
12/2=6
