Second friend walks faster
Solution:
Two friends workout on the treadmill
To find who walked datser, let us first find the unit rate
Unit rate = miles walked in 1 hour ( miles per hour )
One friend walked 2 miles in [tex]\frac{3}{4}[/tex] of an hour
Therefore,
[tex]\text{ miles per hour } = \frac{ 2 \text{ miles}}{\frac{3}{4} \text{ hour }}\\\\\text{ miles per hour } = 2\text{ miles}} \times \frac{4}{3} \text{ hour }\\\\\text{ miles per hour } = 2.67[/tex]
Thus unit rate of first friend is 2.67 miles per hour
The second friend walked [tex]1\frac{3}{4}[/tex] mile in 30 minutes
First convert the mixed fraction to improper fraction
[tex]\rightarrow 1\frac{3}{4} \text{ miles } = \frac{4 \times 1 + 3}{4} = \frac{7}{4} \text{ miles }[/tex]
Convert 30 minutes to hours
[tex]1 \text{ minute } = \frac{1}{60} \text{ hour }\\\\30 \text{ minute } = 30 \times \frac{1}{60} \text{ hour }\\\\30 \text{ minute } = 0.5 hour[/tex]
Therefore,
[tex]\text{ miles per hour } = \frac{\frac{7}{4}}{0.5} = \frac{7}{4} \times \frac{1}{0.5}\\\\\text{ miles per hour } = 3.5[/tex]
Thus unit rate of second friend is 3.5 miles per hour
On comparing, unit rate of both friends,
unit rate of second friend > unit rate of first friend
3.5 > 2.67
Thus second friend walks faster
