Pope Alexander VI, the then Pope was of Spanish origin. He issued an order stating the territories which are to be shared by the Spanish and the Portuguese, ranging from a particular longitude from the north pole to the south pole. This included the Cape Verde Islands too. However these two countries were not allowed to occupy territory which was controlled by each other.
