In this sentence it is clear that the narrator does not feel comfortable with the question he has just been asked, and so he chooses to lie to her so that he can avoid going deep in the question he was asked.

E)They would discuss their experiences right up to the time of battle and then suddenly they wouldn't talk anymore. In this sentence the author shows how unwilling the soldiers are to talk about war and how they can go from talking about the battle to suddenly not talking anymore, as if they are blocking the memories away.
