Im pretty sure one of them would be the Reef Mohave desert, which make the region is really hard to explored, and the other one would be the great dividing range, which separated Australian region with its collection of tall mountains

Early European exploration of Australia's interior was prevented by Western Plateau and Great Dividing Range.
Explanation:
The people of Europe wanted to explore Australia from inside for serving it's own purposes and benefits when it was a colony of the European people. But there were certain geographical features which acted as the shield and protector of Australia and protected this continent from being explored and exploited by the countries which had colonized Australia. These features were the great dividing range and the western plateau and this plateau is also known commonly as the shield of Australia.
