Explanation:
We can described substances as pure or impure substances.
Pure substances are elements and compounds with the following characteristics:
- Pure substances are distinct substances
- All parts of them are homogeneous
- They have a definite composition.
- They cannot be easily separated or broken down into simpler substances by physical means.
- Separation by physical methods is not easy
- They have unique set of physical properties
Impure substances are called mixtures and they have the following properties:
- Their composition is indefinite
- Identities of their constituents are retained.
- Constituents reacts differently to change conditions.
- They can easily be separated using physical methods.
Based on the number of coexisting phases, we can separate mixtures into two:
- Homogeneous mixtures are mixtures whose constituents exists in just one phase e.g air, water-kerosene, water-ethanol, alloys
- Heterogeneous mixtures have their constituents in at least two different phases e.g aerated drinks,m muddy water, sand sugar solution, smoky air.
