The withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union, often shorter Brexit, has been a political goal pursued by various individuals, law groups and political parties since the United Kingdom joined the forerunner of the European Union in 1973.
Withdrawal from the European Union is a right of the Member States of the European Union under Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union.
On 23 June 2016, the United Kingdom voted again on the issue in a referendum on EU membership. This referendum was regulated in parliament when the 2015 referendum law on the European Union was passed.
The result of the June 2016 referendum was 51.89% for the exit (17,410,742 votes) and 48.11% for the remainder (16,141,241 votes), with a turnout of 72.21% and 25,359 invalid votes.
