What is brainstorming?
Brainstorming represents a group activity where specific problem(s) is presented and efforts are made in form of ideas and spontaneous contributions to find a solution to the identified problem.
In a brainstorming session, a list of ideas contributed are noted and critically and objectively evaluated as credible solutions to the identified problems
Ground Rules for Brainstorming
For an effective brainstorming session, ground rules are expected to be set in order to ensure that everyone is able to make contributions without intimidation. Some of the ground rules include:
1. There are no dumb Ideas,
2. Don't criticize the suggestions of others, simply make yours,
3. Instead of criticisms, build on the ideas of others,
4. The expectation is to get quantity even if there aren't enough quality. Make efforts to get alot of suggestions and then quality solutions can be developed from the gathered suggestions.
Brainstorming session Steps
1. Get a group of people to address a challenge, opportunity or problem
2. Ask the group to generate numerous ideas not minding how 'extreme' such ideas and suggestions may seem.
3. Review and select the most interesting ideas and then start a discusson on how to improve, combine or implement the selected ideas, suggestions and strategies.
