Here you go: First you must set up your equation in a y= mx+b format like this 3x+1=-x+5
I always try to get rid of the small numbers first because it is easier: 3x+1(-1)=-x+5(-1)
That will simplify it to this: 3x=-x+4
Then get rid of the -x by adding. Remember whatever you do to one side you must do to the other side: 3x(+x)=-x(+x)+4
Your equation will simplify down to this: 4x=4
Now you just need to isolate the variable so divide 4 on both sides.
So this should answer your question: x=1
