The movement of the African American from the south to the north is known as the Great Migration.

The period of the Great migration was actually a time when millions of young men proceeded to Europe to fight, and also this period was also the time when the American economy moved from being peacetime to wartime and all factories, industries productions increased and these companies needed more workers.

The available vacancies were filled by some women but most of the jobs were occupied by African Americans who moved in from the South

During this period, the factory managers in the North asked labor recruiters to employ blacks and move them down to the war industries within the Northern cities which include Cleveland, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Detroit, and other Northern cities.

Although there several black Americans working as agricultural laborers with low paying wages but most of them left the jobs and move en-mass to the North.

The desire of the Black Americans in the south to escape Jim Crow laws is also one of the causes of the great depression. The black southerners moved in droves to the south to escape segregation.

One of the significant effects of the Great migration is that it led to an increase in the population of black Americans in the North.
