Militarism, Building up a strong military force was the main objective for France and Germany as in the Napoleonic Wars both countries engaged in a conflict. As military strength became a main objective for these countries the need to use it against each other acted as a cause when enough tension was built between the two countries.  

Alliances, As well as Militarism the Alliances are a long-term cause because they take time to develop. In the WWI context there were two important alliances between Russia, England and France that was called entente alliance and later on they were known as the Allies. On the other hand, were Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy, this alliance was called the central powers alliance and both sought to contain each other imperialism quests.

Nationalism, Nationalism is also a long-term cause of WWI. This political view stands for the believe that the national proud surpasses foreign countries proud, meaning that my country is better than the rest of the world. After the Franco Prussian war the Germans believed they were the best army on earth and felt really proud of their military power.  

Imperialism, Imperialism is the sought of conquering different territories and make them live under the rule of an Imperialist country. This view is also a long-term cause and depicts how in a given point a country's eagerness for domain other nations will result in a military conflict.

Assassination, The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was a short-term cause of the war. When the Archduke died the alliances came into play as Austria declared war to Serbia and immediately Russia declared war to Germany as Germany supported Austria in the war with Serbia.
