An airplane flies 100 km north in 20 min, then 150 km west in 40 min and finally 500 km

south in 52 min.

a. What is the total distance and total displacement of the plane?

b. What are the average velocity and average speed for the trip?

Respuesta :

Answer

given,

100 km north in 20 min

50 km west in 40 min

500 km  south in 52 min.

a) total distance

 D = d₁ + d₂ + d₃

 D = 100 + 150 + 500

 D = 750 Km

 displacement of the plane from the original position

  [tex]D' = \sqrt{400^2 + 150^2}[/tex]

  [tex]D' = \sqrt{160000 + 22500}[/tex]

  [tex]D' = \sqrt{182500}[/tex]

  D' = 427.2 Km

b) average speed

    [tex]s = \dfrac{100 + 150 + 500}{20+40+52}[/tex]

    [tex]s = \dfrac{750}{112}[/tex]

           s = 6.696 km/minute

   average velocity

  [tex]s = \dfrac{total\ displacement }{\Delta t}[/tex]

  [tex]s = \dfrac{427.2}{112}[/tex]

           s = 3.814 km/minutes
