In 1933 the first public burning of unwanted books was staged by the Nazis on May 10, 1933. These were books by Jewish authors, socialists, and even Christians who did not support the Nazis.

The books by Jewish authors Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud, Franz Werfel, Max Brod, Franz Kafka and many others were burned.

Books of american authors, such as Ernest Hemingway and Helen Keller, and European classics such as Victor Hugo, Marcel Proust, Andre Malraux and HG Wells.
