Light-independent reactions are a set of chemical reactions that occur in plant chloroplasts during photosynthesis. The product of these chemical reactions is glucose, a carbon compound essential for living things.

Photosynthesis is part of the carbon cycle, and therefore is involved in the flow o this element in the biosphere.  

During the day, plants use the Sun's energy to convert CO2 from the atmosphere into carbohydrates (photosynthesis). During the night, they use the carbohydrates  they produced to produce energy and release CO2 back into the atmosphere (respiration).
