Thesis: In “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” Martin Luther King Jr. structures his ideas strategically and uses allusions and metaphors to persuade his readers to end segregation. Body Paragraph 1 Topic Sentence: Dr. King structures his ideas strategically to persuade his readers to end segregation. Example: Dr. King begins his letter by stating the purpose for why he’s writing to the clergymen. He wants to respond to their criticism in “patient and reasonable terms.” Explanation: Stating the purpose for writing at the beginning sets a context for the reader. This is a strategic move because Dr. King knows his reader will have a better understanding of the rest of his letter if he states his purpose early on. Example: In the middle of the letter, Dr. King uses many examples of the brutality African-Americans face, especially in Birmingham. Explanation: By placing the specific examples of brutality against African-Americans after making the claim that “Birmingham is probably the most thoroughly segregated city in the United States,” Dr. King makes his claim more factual. Listing the abuses African-Americans suffer one after another makes a strong impact as opposed to spreading out the examples.
