Magma, liquid rock under high pressure and temperature, rises from the mantle and up into the crust through fissures. As it rises through the fissures it can melt rocks of the crust above it such that it punches a hole through the crust and explodes as a volcanic eruption at the surface. In some cases, before the magma can punch its way to the surface, it forms magma chambers when it melts a large portion of rocks around it in the crust hence growing laterally in size too.
