Ellis Island was the main port of entry for immigrants coming from Europe in the early 1900s. Most of these immigrants came to the United States hoping to find better work opportunities, more freedom or less persecution.
If you were a 16-year-old immigrant arriving to the United States, you would most likely have a lot of hopes and fears. You would probably hope that your parents are able to find work in the United States. You would also hope that people are kind to your family. Finally, you might also hope that the United States offers you opportunities for your future.
However, you might also have some fears. You might fear people being racist or discriminatory towards you or your family. You might also fear not being able to make friends. Finally, you might fear never seeing your friends or family back home again.
