They people bestowed their agreement/approval, unlike most of the countries at the time where your obedience was expected. Self autonomy is recognized in the U.S. constitution.
In China and Russia, utilitarianism allows you to contribute your opinion, but your opinion/beliefs should not interfere dramatically from the group whole.
