Jumano were recognized for acting as go-betweens for Spanish settlers and Indian tribes. They were traders and hunters. When Antonio de Espejo used the term to designate persons residing at La Junta in 1581, the term "Jumano" was born. They lived in harmony and had tattoos all over their bodies.
These Jumanos were nomads who traveled along the current routes of the Rio Grande, Colorado, and Concho rivers. The Jumanos excelled in hunting. They went buffalo hunting. Skin tepees were utilized by Jumano nomads. It has been hypothesized that stone circles in the area of La Junta de Los Ros and elsewhere are proof of this style of habitation.
