Sectional feeling surfaced when territories were added to the United States because the question of slavery was brought up. The North opposed slavery and the South allowed it. The Missouri Compromise was a bitter disappointment to those who wanted slavery to stop expanding westward because it allowed the westward expansion of slavery below the 36 degrees long. 30 degrees lat. The Kansas-Nebraska bill allowed popular sovereignty so people poured in from anti-slave states and pro-slave states to vote. This caused tension in Kansas and Nebraska, and was discouraging to anti-slave voters. Gold was found in California, which admitted it as a free state so the slavery question was brought up again.

The Compromise of 1850 was a way to balance the free-states, slave-states balance. It included 5 main attributes they were…

1. Texas surrenders its claim to New Mexico and other area.

2. South prevents the Wilmot Proviso.

3. California is a free state.

4. Slave trade banned in Washington D.C.

5. Fugitive slave law.

The Compromise of 1850 delayed the Civil War for 10 years. War finally settled the slavery issue by abolishing slavery with the 13th amendment.
