Temperance was a big issue that was tackled during this time. Temperance groups, primarily run by women, claimed that alcohol was ruining family life and the lives of men. Congress later passed an amendment called Prohibition which outlawed the sale or consumption of liquor (it was later repealed due to illegal bootlegging). Another issue was women's suffrage, which was the women's right to vote. Women joined picket lines to protest. The 19th amendment was later passed which gave women the right to vote.
