When Charlemagne was crowned by the pope as the first Holy Roman Emperor, was this act more beneficial for the authority of the Roman Catholic Church or was it more beneficial for Charlemagne? Did religious or secular authority stand to benefit more from this powerful act or was it equally beneficial? Explain.

Respuesta :

When Charlemagne was crowned by the Pope to be the first Holy Roman Emperor it was an action that benefited both sides immensely. Charlemagne had big benefit from this because he gained even greater power and importance in Europe, as he was backed by the Roman Catholic Church. The Roman Catholic Church had big benefit too, as Charlemagne obliged himself to protect it, as well s help in the spreading of the religion. The Roman Catholic Church gained a very powerful protector, which was crucial for its survival, but also had a person that was spreading their power by converting more and more people.
