Mr. Rochester is a difficult character to define in the novel Jane Eyre. He is a flawed character who does not easily fit in most stereotypical categories. He is a stern, rude and abrupt man who is resentful towards life. He believes that it is morally right to chase pleasure at any cost, and this puts him at odds with Jane's stronger moral code.
However, Mr. Rochester is far from being a villain. Although he does not necessarily agree with all moral notions that Jane puts forward, he nevertheless justifies his actions in some way. Moreover, he does care for Jane, as well as admires her. Although he can be difficult and even "beastly," he is not one-dimensional, which makes it difficult for us to place him in any concrete category.
