The system of Checks and Balances is a mechanism to keep balance between the three independent branches of the US federal goverment: legislative, executive and judiciary. Each branch is granted with supervision powers over the other two, guaranteeing that none of branches gathers enough power as to overrule the other.
The constitutional principles of checks and balances is exemplified by the principle of judicial review. This is one of the powers given to the US Supreme Court as part of the System of Checks and Balances, that enables the court to oveturn any legal instruments enacted by the US Congress or govermental actions, if is considers them to be unconstitutional.
