Positive aspect of the Communism is, the creation of the social security for the populations, by the government providing the free health care and free education toward citizens, as we can see in the Communist countries.
Negative aspect of the Communism is the limitation toward citizens' economic freedom (as it was and currently practiced in a die-hard Communist countries), by making the State sector more involvement in the economy, and limiting private ownership. This could 'kill' the citizens' economic activity and economic innovations, and the economy would be inefficiently managed.
So the conclusion is, Communism brought a better living for the ordinary citizens, but killing the economic freedom on its citizens (as it was and currently practiced in a die-hard Communist countries).
