Coiling is the name of the method developed by Maria and Julian for producing pots. This technique is usually used to shape clay in vessels and it been in existence for thousands of years.

This technique is widely used in New Mexico, Africa, Greece, and china. With the use of this method, it is easy and very possible to produce thicker-walled vessels.
To create pottery, it is a process that requires many steps and lots of skills and patience. However, there are six different processes that will take in producing pot.

- Molding the pot
- Sanding the pot to get rid of rough edges
- Using iron-bearing slip to polish the pot to look smooth
- Dressing or decorating the pot with additional slip
- Firing the pot
Maria Montoya Martinez was a Native American artist, she produced pottery that is known worldwide. Martinez as a little child learned traditional pottery styles from her aunt.
She learned the techniques at the age of eleven by watching her aunt, her father’s relative and grandmother whenever they work on their pottery in the 1890s.
