The verb ser is used for descriptions, occupations, characteristics, time, origin and relationships. When Armando says Soy de Uruguay, the verb ser is used as description. On the other hand, when he says Soy Ingeniero, the verb ser is being used as occupation. In both cases, soy is the conjugation of the verb ser for the first person singular in the simple present.
