LESSON SUMMARY
This lesson consists of a hands on science activity in conjunction with a group discussion about the students' observations and hypotheses made during the experiment. The lesson is designed to give students an opportunity to observe the process of osmosis first hand through the diffusion of water through the membrane of a raisin. The lesson will be done in two parts since the actual experiment (osmosis) will take one hour to complete.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Cell- the basic unit of all living things
Cell Membrane- thin layer that surrounds and holds the parts of a cell together and controls the movement of substances through the cell
Diffusion- the movement of particles from where they are more concentrated to where they are less concentrated
Osmosis- the process of diffusion of water molecules through a cell membrane
Dehydrated- word used to describe something that has had the water removed from it
