The correct answer is - Soviet Union (USSR).

The Soviet Union was one of the two global super powers during the so called Cold War period. They were the biggest enemy of the United States, their biggest competitor, military, economic, technological, political rival.

The Soviet Union though, unlike the United States, collapsed in 1991. The reasons for the collapse of this super power was mostly the bad economic policies and political turmoil. The country was spending so much on weapon development and production that all other sectors suffered, which eventually led to an economic collapse. Lot of countries got out of the Soviet Union and gained independence, with Russia being the main successor of it, though it has to be said that Russia was in miserable conditions and needed a lot of time to get back on track.

Countries that were part of the Soviet Union were Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan.
