Explain the significance of the First Great Awakening and the effect it had on religion in the American colonies.

The First Great Awakening was a movement to revive Christendom, transmitting the Word of God through mass preaching many times in the open air. Traditional ceremonies and rituals were left behind. With this movement it was possible to take the Gospel to the slaves arrived from Africa and the Native Americans. The First Great Awakening had great importance in the unification of the colonies and set a precedent in the ideas that ended in the American Revolution, they also questioned the imposed religious authority and sought freedom in terms of their faith.
