In a T.V. show, you might see a flashback, or a memory. This is an exposition. The producers / writers of the show are giving you some background and history to an event or some of the characters.
Exposition helps us determine why a character or event might have come to play. It helps is realize why a character is the way he or she is. It also helps us figure out why a certain event has come to play, or why it has happened.
