The Immigration Act of 1917 is also known as the 'Literacy Act' and was one the first bill in the the 20th Century United States to restrict immigration.
Many groups had called for an immigration policy that favoured literacy and education. It was the first time an immigration bill severely limited Europe, as the new rule did not allow any illiterate to enter the country if they were more than 16 years of age.
The The Immigration Act of 1917 was eventually altered by the  Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952.
