As he listened to the haunting notes of the song the author realized he had found the inspiration for his next suspense novel.

The teacher reviewing this sentence would point out that as it is a compound sentence it should be separated by a comma. The comma should be written after the word "realized".

Compound sentences are formed by two simple sentences with related ideas. Compound sentences have more than one subject and predicate.
